GODLINESS

by Tony Alamo

The true Christian church is the Body of CHRIST, the expression of CHRIST.1 The purpose of the Church is to project CHRIST into the world. This can be done only by preaching and living the LIFE of the Gospel, the LIFE of JESUS.2

First Timothy chapter 4 states, “Now the SPIRIT speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some [Christians] shall depart from the faith [in CHRIST], giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; Speaking lies in hypocrisy” (1 Timothy 4:1-2). Many churches today are preaching messages that are contrary to the doctrines of CHRIST.3 Some of them preach the doctrine “once saved, always saved.4” They preach this doctrine because they have sin-loving hearts. They are hypocrites, pretending to be Christians. If they ever had faith in CHRIST, they now, as 1 Timothy 4:1 states, “have departed from the faith [faith in CHRIST].” In other words, they have departed from the WORD of GOD, which is CHRIST.5 This of course, is giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils.

To seduce you is to tempt you into wrongdoing. For example, the U.S. Supreme Court has said that it is now all right to lie. This is seducing spirits tempting you to lie, because it is written that “all liars shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone” (Revelation 21:8). Satan wants you in the Lake of Fire forever. To seduce you also means to entice you into having illicit sexual intercourse, which includes fornication, adultery, homosexuality, same sex marriages, and sex with animals. Also, evil seducing spirits lead you into everything contrary to GOD’S WORD, such as pornography or overindulgence in anything—sports, music, food, etc.6

Today’s government and today’s science are filled with seducing spirits. The earth is proven to be only 6,000 years old, but seducing spirits state in the media that the world is millions or even billions of years old instead of 6,000 years old. False religions are also seducing spirits, and this includes any church or religion that convinces you not to have faith in the whole WORD of GOD.

If you don’t have faith in the WORD of GOD, which is CHRIST, then you are lost, and there is no hope for your life or soul.7 JESUS states in Mark 16:16, “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.” The only way to practice the Christian life and church life (and they must be practiced) is to exercise ourselves unto GODLINESS. First Timothy 4:7 says, “But refuse profane and old wives’ fables, and exercise thyself rather unto GODLINESS.” Nothing but the WORD of GOD will do to preserve your soul. Completely shun all evil seducing spirits.8

The Apostle Paul states, “For bodily exercise profiteth little [a little bit]: but GODLINESS is profitable unto all things, having promise of [this present life], and of that which is to come [eternal life]” (1 Timothy 4:8). Years ago, I ran the world’s largest chain of health clubs. This was before I knew CHRIST as my LORD. I know the value of a little exercise. But as a Christian, I now know it is much more necessary for people to exercise their spirits unto GODLINESS. Bodily exercise is profitable only for a little while, but the second kind of exercise is profitable both for today and forever, for our present life and for our life that is to come. Therefore, we need to pay all of our attention to this kind of exercise.

The Apostle Paul says the second kind of exercise that is necessary is the exercise of our human spirit. In order to know what the exercise unto GODLINESS is, we must first see what GODLINESS is in the two epistles to Timothy. The definition of GODLINESS is found in 1 Timothy 3:16, which says, “And without controversy [without any argument] great is the mystery of GODLINESS: GOD was manifest in the flesh, justified in the SPIRIT, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles [unto all the nations], believed on in the world, received up into glory.” After the word “GODLINESS” there is a colon, indicating that what follows is the definition. GODLINESS is GOD-LIKENESS, that is, GOD manifested in the flesh. According to the context, this verse refers not only to CHRIST HIMSELF, but also the Church. The previous verse says, “But if I tarry long [delay], that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of GOD, which is the Church of the living GOD, the pillar and ground [foundation] of the truth” (verse 15).

In principle, the Church is both the house of the living GOD, the pillar and ground (foundation) of the truth, and the mystery of GODLINESS—the manifestation of GOD in the flesh. While CHRIST was on the earth, HE was GOD manifested in the flesh.9 Likewise, the Church today is in the flesh, but GOD is manifested in it (in us).10 We need to keep in mind that GODLINESS implies that GOD is manifested in us, the flesh. GODLINESS is far more than simply having the outward appearance of GOD. When Adam was created, he had the outward likeness of GOD because he was made in the image of GOD (Genesis 1:26).11 He also had the inward likeness of GOD because he was eternal. He was eternal because he was eating from the tree of LIFE, whose fruit is able to keep a person alive forever. This tree of LIFE is JESUS.12 JESUS said, “I am the WAY, the TRUTH, and the LIFE” (John 14:6).

“Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the SON of MAN, and drink HIS blood, ye have no LIFE in you. Whoso eateth MY flesh, and drinketh MY blood, hath eternal LIFE; and I will raise him up at the last day. For MY flesh is meat indeed, and MY blood is drink indeed. He that eateth MY flesh, and drinketh MY blood, dwelleth in ME [the LIFE], and I [the LIFE] in him. As the living FATHER hath sent ME, and I live by the FATHER: so he that eateth ME, even he shall live by ME” (John 6:53-57).

Adam stopped eating from the tree of LIFE (JESUS) when his wife Eve gave him fruit to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Adam did eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, the tree which GOD told them that if they ate from it, they would surely die.13 They surely have died, and all humanity has died, because we are the sons and daughters of Adam and Eve.14

Adam had a choice to make. He could eat from all the trees in the Garden of Eden, but there were two trees that he had to make a choice as to whether he would eat from one or the other. One tree was the tree of LIFE, and the other tree was the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. If Adam would eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, he would die, because the eternal LIFE of GOD would depart from him. Here it is obvious that LIFE is something that we eat or that we don’t eat. “Believe on the [WORD of GOD, the] LORD JESUS CHRIST, and thou shalt be saved [thou shalt live forever in eternity in Heaven]” (Acts 16:31). So it is obvious from hundreds of scriptures that to have eternal LIFE, we must eat it.15 When Adam committed suicide by eating from the world, he threw away eternal LIFE.

Also, just before JESUS raised Lazarus from the dead, Martha told JESUS, “LORD, if THOU hadst been here, my brother had not died. But I know, that even now, whatsoever THOU wilt ask of GOD, GOD will give it THEE. JESUS saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again. Martha saith unto HIM, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day. JESUS said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the LIFE: he that believeth in ME, though he were dead, yet shall he live…And when HE thus had spoken, HE cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with grave clothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. JESUS saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go” (John 11:21-25, 43-44).

It’s obvious that we must eat from the tree of LIFE, which is the WORD of GOD, JESUS, and drink from the fountain or river of LIFE, after we have been cleansed thoroughly by the blood of JESUS.16 When all of our sins have been washed away in the blood of JESUS, the river of LIFE flows into us, and we are clean by the blood of JESUS.17

We eat CHRIST’S flesh and drink HIS blood by breathing in the WORD of GOD that was breathed out from GOD. This is how man LIVES. JESUS said, “It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every WORD that proceedeth out of the mouth of GOD” (Matthew 4:4). “It is the SPIRIT [the river of LIFE] that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are SPIRIT, and they are LIFE [the river of LIFE]” (John 6:63). After JESUS was resurrected from the dead, HE entered into the room where the disciples were assembled and said unto them, “Peace be unto you.…HE breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the HOLY SPIRIT” (John 20:19, 22). So receiving the breathed WORD of GOD is as simple as breathing it in. We receive it by faith.

When Adam was not partaking of the tree of LIFE, he was not able to manifest GOD, because GOD was no longer in him. GOD departed from him. GOD’S SPIRIT departed from him. This shows us that people have been able to be saved, filled with the SPIRIT of GOD, from the beginning of the world. However, people can still fall away from GOD.18 This truth is contrary to statements made by many denominational churches [seducing spirits] today, which are not churches of GOD because they deny GOD’S WORD. If you don’t have the SPIRIT of GOD, then you don’t have GOD. You need to repent of your sinful lethargy and be born into the Spiritual world by eating and drinking JESUS the WORD, the SPIRIT. For GOD to be manifested in the flesh in a living way, for HIM to express HIMSELF through us, HE must live in us.

The Apostle Paul in 1 Timothy 1:3-4 says, “As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine, Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than GODLY edifying [GOD’S economy, which is HIS church] which is in faith.” GOD’S economy is HIS church, HIS building. Today, GOD is building HIMSELF into us. GOD’S intention as revealed in the entire Bible is to work HIMSELF into mankind.19

Today we are being built up as one in GOD’S divine nature. Second Peter 1:3-4 says, “According as HIS [CHRIST’S] divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto LIFE [eternal LIFE] and GODLINESS, through the knowledge of HIM that hath called us to glory and virtue: Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.”

GOD’S work of building is to build HIMSELF into us and with us so that we may be built together as one body in HIM.20 This is GOD’S building economy, HIS church. The word “economy” in Greek is also the word for dispensation, or governmental arrangement, which here refers to the government of GOD. This dispensation and arrangement is for GOD’S building (HIS church). GOD is dispensing HIMSELF into us and with us so that HE and we will be one.21 This is why the LORD says in Hebrews 10:24-25, “And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.” This is for you, Sonny and Gail. Get to church and stay there, and this goes for you, the LORD’S congregation.

GOD’S building economy (the church) is the mystery of GODLINESS because it is SPIRITUAL. The natural man, the unsaved man, the man who doesn’t have CHRIST, the LIFE, in him is a natural, carnal man.22 First Corinthians 2:14-15 says, “But the natural man receiveth not the things of the SPIRIT of GOD: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.”

In the whole universe, this economy, this church of GOD, is a mystery, not only to the unbelievers, but also to many immature Christians. Ephesians 3:9 verifies this statement by saying, “And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in GOD, who created all things by JESUS CHRIST [who is the WORD of GOD23].”

Many Christians say that GOD saved us simply because HE loved us, that HE wanted to deliver us from Hell and bring us to Heaven. Not many are clear concerning the mystery of GODLINESS. GOD’S intention is to pour HIMSELF into us and build HIMSELF together with us as one. This is a true mystery not only to man, but to the angels as well. “Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls. Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you: Searching what, or what manner of time the SPIRIT of CHRIST which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of CHRIST, and the glory that should follow. Unto whom it was revealed, that not unto themselves, but unto us they did minister the things, which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the HOLY SPIRIT sent down from Heaven; which things the angels desire to look into” (1 Peter 1:9-12). However, through the revelation in the WORD of GOD, this mystery has been made known to us (Ephesians 3:4-5). It is no longer only a mystery; it is a reality.

The exercise unto GODLINESS is the exercise of our human spirit. By all of the preceding points, we can be clear that GODLINESS is GOD manifested in the flesh. Therefore, to exercise ourselves unto GODLINESS is to exercise so that GOD may be manifested in us. Bodily exercise does not help us to have GOD manifested in us. Likewise, mere mental exercise does not avail for GOD to express HIMSELF within us. Therefore, the exercise mentioned in 1 Timothy 4:7 must be the exercise of our human spirit. It is by the exercise of our spirit that GOD is manifested in us.

Second Timothy 4:22 says, “The LORD JESUS CHRIST be with your spirit. Grace be with you.” This verse is the closing word of the two epistles to Timothy. Since a person’s closing word stresses the main point of his writing, Paul’s central point in these epistles must be related to our spirit. This verse tells us that GOD today is in our spirit. Moreover, it indicates that the ONE within us is not only GOD HIMSELF, but also CHRIST the LORD. To mention the LORD implies that GOD did not come into man directly. First, HE was incarnated to be the man JESUS (John 1:14).

“In the beginning GOD created the heaven and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). The word “GOD” here is ELOHIM, which means HE is a plural GOD, the triune GOD, GOD the FATHER, GOD the WORD which is CHRIST, and GOD the HOLY SPIRIT. These THREE are all ONE GOD.24

GOD who was in the flesh, a man, went to the cross, and was crucified for the purpose of redeeming us. This was to accomplish the redemption of all those who would accept GOD’S redemption plan. HE was buried in a tomb. Three days later, HE was resurrected from among the dead.25 It is obvious that HIS resurrection is HIS glorification. “Ought not CHRIST to have suffered these things, and to enter into HIS glory? (Luke 24:26, 46). At this time, CHRIST became a QUICKENING or LIFE-GIVING SPIRIT (1 Corinthians 15:45b). This SPIRIT WHO is CHRIST HIMSELF came into our human spirit at the time of our salvation.

When CHRIST was still on the cross and was dead, there is this witness: John 19:33-34 states, “But when they [the soldiers] came to JESUS, and saw that HE was dead already, they brake not His legs: But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced HIS side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.” The BLOOD of JESUS takes away our sins. John 1:29 says, “Behold the LAMB of GOD [which is JESUS], which taketh away the sin of the world.”

LIFE comes from the river of LIFE, which is from the throne of GOD. The water in the river of LIFE is pure and as clear as crystal. Revelation 22:1 states, “And he [the angel of the LORD] showed me a pure river of water of LIFE, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of GOD and of the LAMB.” The BLOOD is what takes our sins away, and the water is symbolic of the HOLY SPIRIT, which lives in us after our sins are washed away in the BLOOD of the LAMB. The blood and water which came out of the side of JESUS after the soldier pierced HIM in the side is the witness, symbolic of the BLOOD which takes away our sins, and the HOLY SPIRIT which is symbolic of the river of LIFE, the SPIRIT of CHRIST emanating from the throne of GOD which enters us, JESUS, the QUICKENING or LIFE-GIVING SPIRIT.

Proverbs 29:18 states, “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” We need to visualize the reality of the river of LIFE coming out of the throne of GOD and from the side of JESUS, mingled with HIS soul-cleansing BLOOD, so that we continue to never fall away from our precious salvation so that we never perish. People have too many worthless thoughts and visions that are wrong, thoughts of today’s present life rather than keeping their vision on JESUS, the river of LIFE, and the throne of GOD, from which all LIFE emanates.

The word “pure” means unmixed. There is no pollution in the river of LIFE, the SPIRIT of CHRIST, the SPIRIT of GOD. It is as clear as crystal. You may freely drink of it and not fear any pollution. Right now, let the BLOOD of JESUS wash away all of your filthy sins, and let the river of LIFE from the throne of GOD and from the side of CHRIST enter your spirit with GOD’S eternal LIFE. Do it now by saying this prayer. Then be baptized, fully submerged in water, in the name of the FATHER, of the SON, and of the HOLY SPIRIT. Then study the KJV Bible and all of my literature, and do what the Bible says. Say this prayer:

Prayer

My LORD and my GOD, have mercy upon my soul, a sinner. 1 I believe that JESUS CHRIST is the SON of the living GOD. 2 I believe that HE died on the cross and shed HIS precious blood for the forgiveness of all my former sins. 3 I believe that GOD raised JESUS from the dead by the power of the HOLY SPIRIT 4 and that HE sits on the right hand of GOD at this moment, hearing my confession of sin and this prayer. 5 I open up the door of my heart, and I invite YOU into my heart, LORD JESUS. 6 Wash all of my filthy sins away in the precious blood that YOU shed in my place on the cross at Calvary. 7 YOU will not turn me away, LORD JESUS; YOU will forgive my sins and save my soul. I know because YOUR WORD, the Bible, says so. 8 YOUR WORD says that YOU will turn no one away, and that includes me. 9 Therefore, I know that YOU have heard me, and I know that YOU have answered me, and I know that I am saved. 10 And I thank YOU, LORD JESUS, for saving my soul, and I will show my thankfulness by doing as YOU command and sin no more.11

Now that you are saved, make sure you are baptized, fully submerged in water, in the name of the FATHER, in the name of the SON, and in the name of the HOLY SPIRIT (Matthew 28:18-20). Serve GOD with all of your heart, soul, mind, and strength (Mark 12:30). Study the Scriptures, and do what they say until the day you die (2 Timothy 2:15, 3:14-17).
