BITING THE BULLET

Before I became a Christian, the marketing world proclaimed I had the touch of Midas. Everything I touched seemed to turn to gold. In my early twenties I became the executive vice president of American Health Studios and Silhouette Figure Form International, the world's largest chain of health studios. I was also the executive vice president of Canadian Health Ways Limited, Canada's largest chain of spas in the 50's. The home office for American Health Studios and Silhouette Figure Form was located at 3917 Montrose Boulevard, Houston, Texas. Our headquarters in Canada was in Winnipeg, Manitoba, located just off the Pembina Highway.
After this, I became exceedingly well-known in the recording industry for putting twenty records on one album and marketing them over radio and television. No one had ever done that before. I also marketed many household products, singers, and motion picture stars (including Sonny and Cher), and acted as an advisor for many record companies, and such artists as Elvis Presley, the Beatles, and the Rolling Stones. I created the marketing campaigns for Rouvaun and for Bobby Jameson. Later, I was told that the Beatles and Rolling Stones, as well as P.J. Proby, wanted me to do their management work for them, as well as manage their marketing and recording. I was asked to do the promotion for both John and Bobby Kennedy, as well as many other well-known figures.
I've written several articles regarding the supernatural experiences I've had with the Lord before and after I was saved. These are footnoted below.1 Shortly after I was supernaturally saved, God led me to the most godly person I ever met in my life by another supernatural vision, which was given to both her and myself in the very same period of time, 1965. We knew that we were to be married. I had believed by the visions that we were already married; however, we went to Las Vegas and were married three times within a one month period of time.
Susie began taking me to the Full Gospel Christian Businessmen's meetings, to other churches and assemblies, and to a host of different missions. Because Sue had been in the ministry over twenty-five years, she knew the heads of all of them. They wanted me to give my testimony at their meetings. They would often ask Susie to preach as well. I was somewhat of a phenomenon to them since there weren't many Jewish people being saved thirty-five years ago. The Bible states that a remnant of Jews would be saved in the last days, and added that they would turn the world upside down for Christ.2 The Jews coming unto Christ is a sign of the end time.3 Many of the Christian churches were so thrilled with me that they wanted to make me their assistant pastor. Some of them even wanted to get involved with me in business because they had heard how much money I had made in the world. After the Lord convinced me greatly that He existed, I wanted no part of business ventures. I thought it strange that the churches seemed to be more interested in business than in witnessing about Christ coming back to earth again.4 All I wanted to do was talk about Jesus, read, pray, and tell the world how real and exciting Christ, His Father, and the Holy Spirit are. It's so marvelous to be saved, and so marvelous to see others being saved through Christ's ministry living in us.5
I knew God was real. I knew He was everywhere6 I knew He saw everything that I did, knew everything I said, and knew every thought I had.7 He knows all these things about everybody.8 I knew that Christ was living within me with the Father by the Spirit, as a babe, and I also knew He was not yet fully developed in me.9 I knew I would have to seek Him and serve Him until He became fully developed within me.10 I knew I had to keep the commandments of the Lord and be guided by His Holy Spirit.11 The Spirit of Christ that was within my spirit needed to grow up, to fully develop into the full stature of Christ, who is also the Father and the Holy Spirit.12 This growing up process takes time. It takes a continuous, constant studying of the Bible and prayer.13 The Spirit of the Triune God must be dispensed fully into a human being's body in order to totally mortify or kill all of the remaining world, the self, and the influence of the devil, which still remains in the newly born-again flesh.14 The Apostle Paul himself, that is, the flesh of the Apostle Paul had to die daily in order to be renewed with the Spirit of God daily.15 He stated, "I keep under my body [under the influence of the Holy Spirit], and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway" (1 Cor. 9:27). Every Christian must, on a daily basis, "walk in the Spirit, and...not fulfil the lust of the flesh" (Gal. 5:16).
Sue believed a lot of people in the recording industry thought I was crazy since I had left the industry with the most brilliant career the industry had known to serve Jesus. I owned a Beatles album because I promoted Pete Best, the original drummer with the Beatles. The Rolling Stones, the Beatles, and many other singers wanted me to handle their careers, management, marketing, and recording. Sue thought I should promote the opera singer who was currently working at a woodworking factory, an unknown, rather than a big name star so I could prove my intelligence to the music, marketing, and political world I had just been saved from so that they wouldn't think that being a Christian was insane. I liked the idea, and I liked the challenge of making an unknown opera singer, a woodworker in a factory, become a star in the usual amount of time it took me to make a person a star, which was around ninety days. So I recorded Rouvaun, did the marketing, then booked Rouvaun as the star of the Casino de Paris, which had a cast of over one hundred dancers and other singers imported from Paris, France.
Rouvaun became internationally famous with his appearances on five Jack Benny Birthday Party television specials, on The Ed Sullivan Show, in the London Palladium, and in the Coconut Grove at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles, as well as at the opening of the Americana Hotel's entertainment room, which was called the Royal Box. The industry didn't think I was crazy anymore. I proved to the industry and to Pavarotti with his hype team, that an opera star could make it in the rock 'n roll era if there was an intelligent person guiding his or her career.
While proving to the industry that I was intelligent and not crazy, I began neglecting my reading of the Bible and my praying. I also began ignoring a couple of the things the Bible commanded me to do. I wasn't filling myself with the Word of God daily so that my flesh could be totally mortified by the Spirit and Life incorporated within the Word of God.16
A Foursquare pastor from Tulare, California, had a five piece family gospel band. He was the lead singer and guitar player for the band. They wanted me to record and market them, and even though I knew they were not professional enough or commercial enough, I agreed to do it.
At this time, the money I had made in the world had dwindled to the point where we didn't really have that much. We had bought a home in Zuma Beach, high on a hill overlooking the ocean, with some of the money I made by promoting Rouvaun, by selling my fifty percent interest in him, and by selling my recording contract with him to RCA Victor. After the purchase of the beautiful home and other things, there wasn't much money left. I kept telling Susie to let me sell the Beatles album and some of the masters on the Undertakers and on other artists that I still have, but she said, "No, if the Lord is going to promote us, let Him do the promotion. He doesn't want your way of thinking or your money, Tony. He wants your heart." So I never sold the Beatles album or the other masters that I own to this day. Sensible people know I am not in the ministry for money. If I wanted money, I could easily sell my Beatles masters and the other masters and be wealthy enough to retire.
Right away I took the pastor's money to pay for the recording session. Susie didn't know how much money I had or didn't have. There was still about a week or two before the session. One of the members of the band was a police officer in Chicago. He had arranged a leave of absence in order to play in the session with his dad, mother, and sisters. After two weeks the money started going. I was supposed to do the session in a big studio. I had some other money that was supposed to be coming in, but all of a sudden it didn't come in. I didn't have enough money to do the session in a very good studio.
Susie and I stopped to have dinner one evening at a restaurant on Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills. The waiter filled our crystal glasses with ice water. The table was beautifully adorned with the finest linen, exquisite china, silver, and gorgeous candlesticks. The Lord, who was speaking to me on a daily basis, poured His Spirit down and said, "You're not to eat or drink until after the session, and if you do I'm going to kill you and send your soul to Hell." Susie was very hungry. I told her, "Go ahead and order, I'm not going to eat." She became very angry with me. I said, "The Lord just told me that I can't eat anything or drink anything. I have to be on a fast. It won't bother me a bit. Just go ahead and eat."
So a week went by without me eating or drinking. I was hoping that the session would be really soon. Then we got word from the Foursquare people in Tulare that their session would have to be held off for quite some time because the Chicago Police Department wouldn't let his son come to Los Angeles yet. At this time I was literally boiling inside and wanted water very badly.
I began wondering, "Lord, why is this such a severe punishment?" He told me, "You know these people are never going to make it in the recording industry, and unless I bless something, it is not going to go.17 You knew that you were going to use a good studio, and you knew that you were telling these people something that really wasn't going to happen. You encouraged them into doing this thing so you could get their money. These are Christians. These are My sons and daughters. You do not lie to people. You do not take people's money and not do with it what you say you are going to do. My Word states, "Lie not one to another" (Col. 3:9).18 Lie not to the Holy Spirit.19 These people are filled with My Spirit. If you eat or drink, that which happened to Ananias and Sapphira will happen to you."20
After three weeks Susie was begging me, "Tony, if you don't drink water, if you don't drink something you are going to die. For God's sake, eat something, drink something. No human being can stand not drinking for the period of time that you've gone." I told her, "Stop bugging me by telling me to drink water, honey. The Lord said He would kill me and send my soul to Hell if I did." Susie said, "Oh, you never told me. You'll have to continue your fast without food and water."
I would fill the tub full of ice-cold water because my entire body was boiling and all I could think about was water. I had gone beyond the desire for food, it was just water I wanted. Just give me water. So I'd sit in that water, not to really take the thirst away, but because it would let me feel all the water. I knew I had to take a bath anyway. I knew I couldn't drink it, but I could sit in it.
At this time, on the hills above the beaches of Zuma and Malibu and around Santa Monica, there was a big fire because of a drought in the Los Angeles area. There were helicopters flying over fires and dropping big loads of water on them. The fire grew so close to our house that we had to sprinkle water on the roof with a garden hose. To add to the curse that was happening to me, mice from the fields ran for cover in our house. The house was infested with them. I would rally all the wit I had to trap them and get rid of them. Sometimes, while doing so, my mind would temporarily forget the inferno in me caused by my not drinking water for so many days. It wasn't bad enough that I was as thirsty as I was. The horrible heat wave in Los Angeles only added to my discomfort and misery.
Then one night, while lying on a couch in our living room, a voice came to me, stating, "You'd better listen to your wife. You'd better drink some water or you're going to die." I wanted it to be the Lord so badly, but I didn't think it was the Lord since the Lord had told me I had to do this until the session was over, or He would kill me, and I would go to Hell. I wanted to believe that it was not the Lord that I heard when I was in the restaurant. After all, I was still alive after around four weeks at this point. I had chills because I was so thirsty, yet I was boiling inside at the same time. My skin was cold and I was hot inside. My mouth was so dry that every time I opened it it would crack with a dry sound.
At first I tried to understand what the purpose was for this fast. What had I done to these people that was so wrong that I had to be tormented this way, and I had to be threatened by God in such a way that it seemed God hated me now and wanted to kill me if I so much as drank water? I was thinking these things instead of realizing how evil I had been and remembering how much God hates sin.21 But the voice kept coming to me: "That wasn't God that talked to you at the restaurant, that was the devil. You were just imagining that the Lord told you these things." I said, "Lord, I believe this is the devil, but maybe it isn't. I'm going to start walking towards the sink in the kitchen and if this isn't You, if it really was You at the restaurant, then do something to stop me. I want the truth. I don't want to be deceived here."
So I began walking from the couch towards the kitchen. "Lord, stop me some way because I don't want to die and go to Hell." I kept walking towards the dining area. I walked through the dining area and onto the tile of the kitchen floor. As I approached the sink, a mouse ran across the backboard of the sink, up the drapes, and on top of the fireplace separating the kitchen from the living room. I said, "O God, this house is so full of mice. Maybe that's not a sign for me not to take a drink. Mice are an abomination to me. I don't want to touch anything that they've touched. Maybe that mouse running across the backboard of the sink is not a sign. Give me a sign that I'll know for sure it is You, Lord, a sign that could not be a coincidence."
I kept walking towards the sink. When I was about six feet from the sink, I hesitated. There was a light fixture above the sink with a one hundred watt bulb in it brightly shining. There was a white glass shell over the top of the bulb. I took one more step, praying, "God, show me a sign." In His mercy the light fixture with the light bulb brightly beaming leaped off the wall, somehow detaching itself from the wires and crashing right in front of my feet, where it broke into hundreds of pieces. Because I was barefoot, I could not walk any further. Needless to say, this was exceedingly frightening to me. This was a miracle from God Himself. It greatly emphasized the fact that it really was Him who spoke to me in the restaurant about a month before, warning me that if I ate or drank anything before the session was over He would kill me and send my soul to Hell.
Susie came running down the hallway from the bedroom area to see what the big noise was. Our bedroom was approximately fifty or sixty feet from the kitchen. She asked me in a very excited voice, "What happened? What was the noise?" Then I told her. She said, "You better not take a drink of water." She added, "What just happened here was a miracle from the Lord. You're just going to have to continue on with this fast. You really displeased God." I knew there were still another few days before the recording session. I also knew I was going to have to bite the bullet and go through with it, whether I died or not.
During the next few days, we invited some Italian friends over to the house. They lived in Hollywood, and I had known them for years. I bought cold cuts, cheese, crackers, black olives, green olives, chips, all kinds of dips, every kind of juice and soda pop there was, and an extra bag of ice, all things that I really loved and wanted. It was as though I got some kind of relief out of watching them eat and drink. It seemed exceedingly odd to me that they weren't guzzling the liquids down. They were just sipping it as if it were not precious. I knew that if I could just change places with them, I could really show them how to guzzle liquids. They had full glasses of ice with all these different fruit drinks and things. I thought, "If I only had the opportunity, I would drink every one of those bottles of ice cold pop in crystal glasses with lots and lots of ice." Ada told Susie that she was going to make Italian chicken soup for me on the day of the session.
We now had a date, which was about four more days from that day. I went down to Lou Froman's studio on Sunset Boulevard, which was a block or two down from United and Western Studios on the same side of the street. Lou Froman had sort of a hole in the wall studio. It was just a two track mono studio. If someone made a mistake, we had to do the whole thing all over again because there were only two tracks, one track for all the voices and one track for all the musicians. If it had been an eight, sixteen, twenty-four, or forty-eight track machine and one musician made a mistake, you could lower one track or have him do it over again while the others took a break. During the session, we had to keep doing each song over and over again, which added to the time that I couldn't drink water, because if one person didn't make a mistake on each take, another did. The group was self-contained: they all sang and played instruments. I've got a good ear for music. I couldn't tell them, "Hey, that was a great take," just so I could get water more quickly. I was afraid if I did, the Lord would either punish me more severely or kill me for being even more deceitful to them. I knew the Lord was right there at that session with all of us. I wanted to make sure that God wasn't going to kill me and send my soul to Hell. I made sure that every take was the best that they could do.
After the session was over, I started walking as calmly as I could over to the five gallon jug of refrigerated water from Sparkletts. One person came right in front of me and took the last paper cup. I told Sue to hold the lever down, and I cupped my hands underneath that water and drank it. Then I had some of Ada's Italian chicken noodle soup. It was wonderful. It was the most delicious water and soup I had ever tasted in my life. My punishment from God had lasted approximately thirty to forty days (I lost count of the days because I didn't want to count them, for fear of being frightened at how long it was). This happened around thirty-three years ago, and I'll never forget it.
I wasn't reading the Bible or praying enough for Christ with the Father by the Spirit to grow with His life and power within me.22 My eyes, heart, soul, mind, and strength were not totally focused on the Lord.23 My spiritual eyes were almost blind again. I was almost backslidden, and without God's kind rebuke I would have been lost again. This showed me there is no such thing as eternal security unless you permanently walk in the Holy Spirit.24 I had ignored the reproof of the Word, God's way of life,25 and I was becoming blind to the Lord's leading, guidance, and direction. I was breaking the first commandment, which is to "love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength" (Mark 12:30). I had to repent, convert fully, and remain fully converted.26
Today I see the world government and the news media severely persecuting Christians in a multitude of ways. They lie to them, and tell vicious lies about them as well. I also see many professing Christians aiding the world government in their persecution with their vicious lies.27 If this literature has helped open your blind eyes even a little, then reach out for the little bit of light and strength you've received from it. Open up your heart and let the full light and strength from Almighty God, who is Christ with the Father by the Spirit, fill your heart, mind, and soul with the peace of God that passes human understanding.28
I consider the strong rebuke, the punishment I received from God, to be nothing short of His kindness and great love towards me. Before I received this crude awakening I was blind and unconscious, heading full speed ahead into the pit of Hell.29 God did this to me because He knew it was the only way I would wake up and remember this never-to-be-forgotten lesson from Him. He wanted me to pass this message on to you. Maybe you are far more intelligent than I was and will receive this message from God without having to go through what I did. I pray that this is so.
If you are a political leader, an industrial dynamo, a church leader, or the leader of some cult, God wants you to know that He loves you very much. However, He doesn't love the things that you're doing.30 As a matter of fact, He abhors what we humans do when we are not united with Him by our spirits.31 Therefore, He wants you to repent of your sins so that He can show His love and mercy to you. He will do this if you will only drop your lifestyle of sin and unite yourself to Him.32 Set aside your foolish pride. Don't be concerned about what your staff, your family, your friends, or your peers think about you. "Come unto Me [Jesus says to you], all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest...unto your souls" (Matt. 11:28-29).
Christ is the One who fashioned you and I from the very dirt of the ground.33 It is He that is calling you to Him, not me calling you to me. He wants to shower His mercy and love upon you at this very time. He's been waiting all these years for you to surrender all the things of this world that you have found so dear so that He may shower you with His true love, His mercy, His true riches here on earth, and His eternal riches that shall never pass away.34
We mustn't hate one another35 or lie one to another.36 God made all of us and died for all of us so that we might enjoy the same life He enjoys. It is so foolish for us to not place our full attention on Him. We must do this in order to keep the most important commandment of them all, which is to "Love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength" (Mark 12:30). Don't wait any longer. You've waited far too long already. Don't hesitate. This is the day of your salvation.37 Start out now by saying this prayer:
Prayer
My Lord and my God, have mercy upon my soul, a sinner. 1 I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of the Living God. 2 I believe that He died on the cross and shed His precious blood for the forgiveness of all my sins. 3 I believe that God raised Jesus from the dead by the power of the Holy Spirit 4 and that He sits on the right hand of God at this moment, hearing my confession of sin and this prayer. 5 I open up the door of my heart and I invite You into my heart, Lord Jesus. 6 Wash all of my filthy sins away in the precious blood that You shed in my place on the cross at Calvary. 7 You will not turn me away, Lord Jesus, You will forgive my sins and save my soul. I know because Your Word, the Bible says so. 8 Your Word says that You will turn no one away, and that includes me. 9 Therefore, I know that You have heard me, and I know that You have answered me, and I know that I am saved. 10 And I thank You, Lord Jesus, for saving my soul, and I will show my thankfulness by doing as You command and sin no more. 11
You've just completed the first step in a series of five steps which are necessary to receive salvation. Your second step is to deny yourself and take up the cross daily for the purpose of mortifying yourself, that is, for putting to death your own will, your soulful self, and the world with all of its lusts. All these must be baptized into the death of Christ.
Step three is your resurrection from the satanic life of Adam unto the sinless life of Christ. Step four is your ascension into a position of authority to reign for God on earth, and the fifth step is to reign for God on earth to the end for the purpose of bringing about the kingdom of Heaven on earth. You must learn the Word of God, then submit yourself and do what the Word says, so that the Church and the world may see evidence of your submission to God's Word, His order, and His authority in and by you.
Praise the Lord. May God reward you abundantly.
