The Eternal Trophy

The Apostle Paul in First Corinthians likens the Christian walk like unto a sporting event, stating that when people get into sports, they train with much discipline. He says that “every man that striveth for the mastery [to become a master] is temperate in all things.” When I became a bodybuilder, I had to eat the right things and train the right way. In other words, “They do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we [Christians do it or train to receive] an incorruptible [crown]” (I Cor. 9:25). We don’t eat what we want or the enormous amount of food that we want. We don’t under or overtrain. We are temperate in all things.

Paul says I do this. I “so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air” (I Cor. 9:26). He further says he keeps his body under subjection. He keeps it under subjection “lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway” (I Cor. 9:27).

He goes on to say that he doesn’t want anyone to be ignorant, that God put the entire nation of Israel under a fast for forty years to drink spiritual water, and they were all baptized by Moses “in the cloud and in the sea; And they all did eat that same spiritual meat; And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ. But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness. Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted” (I Cor. 10:1-6).

He tells us, “Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written [this means to follow Christ and to take up our crosses and follow Him.]” Our examples are that we fast and pray, pray without ceasing.1 “The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play. Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand. Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents. Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer. Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come. Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall” (I Cor. 10:7-12).

When a man or a woman wins a bodybuilding contest, they get a trophy of some kind, but it will eventually rust and corrupt. But the body of Christ, when we win the race, we receive a trophy that never fades. This trophy is eternal life.2 We must keep our bodies on the cross, under subjection to the Holy Spirit, to stand.3

Prayer

My LORD and my GOD, have mercy upon my soul, a sinner. 1 I believe that JESUS CHRIST is the SON of the living GOD. 2 I believe that HE died on the cross and shed HIS precious blood for the forgiveness of all my former sins. 3 I believe that GOD raised JESUS from the dead by the power of the HOLY SPIRIT 4 and that HE sits on the right hand of GOD at this moment, hearing my confession of sin and this prayer. 5 I open up the door of my heart, and I invite YOU into my heart, LORD JESUS. 6 Wash all of my filthy sins away in the precious blood that YOU shed in my place on the cross at Calvary. 7 YOU will not turn me away, LORD JESUS; YOU will forgive my sins and save my soul. I know because YOUR WORD, the Bible, says so. 8 YOUR WORD says that YOU will turn no one away, and that includes me. 9 Therefore, I know that YOU have heard me, and I know that YOU have answered me, and I know that I am saved. 10 And I thank YOU, LORD JESUS, for saving my soul, and I will show my thankfulness by doing as YOU command and sin no more.11

You've just completed the first step in a series of five steps which are necessary to receive salvation. Your second step is to deny yourself and take up your cross daily and follow Jesus for the purpose of mortifying your flesh, that is, for putting to death your own will, your soulful self, and the world with all of its lusts. All these must be baptized into the death of Christ.

Step three is your resurrection from the satanic life of Adam unto the sinless life of Christ. Step four is your ascension into a position of authority to reign for God with Christ on earth, and the fifth step is to reign for God in Christ on earth to the end for the purpose of bringing about the kingdom of Heaven on earth. You must learn the Word of God, submit yourselves one to another, and do what the Word says so that the church and the world may see evidence of your submission to God’s Word, His order, and His authority in and by you.

And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the LORD of HOSTS. And all nations shall call you blessed: for ye shall be a delightsome land, saith the LORD of HOSTS” (Malachi 3:8-12).
